>>19009667I actually encountered them a lot as a kid, but we just thought they were game mechanics back then. We didn't know WHY Tauros was the god of crits, but we knew that he was the god of crits.
Hyper beam not recharging when you use it to KO? Working as intended. Hyper Beam is a high risk high reward move intended to be a last ditch effort, and if used correctly, rewards you with a kill that has no drawbacks.
Leech Seed toxic was actually a tactic that some faggot used to use in order to take down my Chansey. Focus Energy, never used because it was a shit move (if it actually did increase critical, it may have actually been used by people who wanted to press their luck, since everyone got hyped when crits hit).
Counter used for OHKO moves was found to be...well, a COUNTER to OHKO moves. If you knew that Rydon was going to horn drill your Hitmonchan, counter him.
Every attack missing? Back then we didn't even have accuracy indicators, so that didn't really show its face much, but it's still pretty obvious that every move can miss, which was normal for an RPG.
Wrap/Bing/Fire spin/Clamp? Nigga, do you even know why every kid carried Fire Spin on their Charizard?
I can go on and on, but pretty much if you played a lot of grade-school competitive back then, with the shitty gradeschool meta, you'd have picked up on these mechanics just from battling so much and theorycrafting to beat the big baddies in school.
>Become well known Pokemon trainer in the school>Score first kiss with QT3.14 Asian loli who's into Pokemon and only found out about you because of your trainer status>TFW nothing comes of it because you're just in lolgradeschool but it was still cute
