In fact they've found a good balance of the two. They're back to their goofy selves but can be more formidable opponents rather than having "a trap only the Pokémon of the day can stop". And they don't appear every episode just for the sake of it.

Still pondering how rich these assholes are. I think whatever they spend on gadgets and stuff is taken out of their own salary, which also explains why they never have enough money to feed themselves; they spend all their earnings on gadgets. And being as young as they are, they probably get shitty gear simply because they don't know what's the good gear and what's the shit gear.

I think they've hit a happy balance between likable and threatening in XY, Jessie's a huge diva and actually uses Wobbs, Meowth is somewhere between cute and obnoxious and occasionally battles a little, and James is reasonably flamboyant with is squid baby.

It's shown in a couple episodes that the three of them together are actually fantastic salesmen and can sell basically anything, you can see this in how literally EVERYBODY is fooled by every disguise they ever had.

The joke is that if they went legit they'd be millionaires, but they want to be badass villains so bad they don't try.

Also that old fallacy that since they've put so much time into trying and failing to catch Pikachu that they can't give up now or it'll all be a waste.

What I don't get is how they sometimes seem to be very competent trainers shooting Ash down like the shit he is and other time they just suck hard ass.

Wobbufet's well timed reflect or mirrocoat are godly in anime and they barely use them. Also Meowth can apparently slice any attack with fury swipes but Jesse and James never use him. When Meowth is on Ash's side then he acts like a pokemon and Ash tells him to do stuff but on Jesse and James' side he never uses his moves.

I'm pretty sure it's been implied Jessie is like 17, I can't remember where I just remember. James would probably be similarly aged. They look fairly mature but their backstory episodes seem to imply they're not that far off from Ash and co.

But then again Ash is also supposed to be 10 and yet I would guess he was no less than 15.

Their Pokemon are the ones who are fairly competent. Arbok lost literally every single battle it ever was in, but it was shown to be really powerful, same with Weezing, Seviper, Victreebel, Carnivine, Cacnea, Lickitung, Yamask, etc.

If they were decent trainers those good Pokemon they've had would be kicking Ash's stupid ass all the time, instead 90% of the time they get wrecked and the other 10% they luck out or win just because the plot needs them to.

Well, story-wise it's probably been less than a year or a year, seeing that B/W made Ash 10 again, but XY's stating that he's a "young man" so it's a big iffy field. Some of the dubbers know the absurdity of Ash's age so the voice actors tend to break the 4th wall, like how they told Dawn they've been chasing Pikachu for as long as she's been alive.
