Nah, Brendan was the worst. He's cocky and always seems to brag, but can't be bothered to create a good team to back up his statements on how he's better than the player. He also decides to quit battling, something he's done for a much longer time than the player character and study Pokemon like his father out of the blue.
Also, I can't stand his hat, but that has nothing to do with his characterization and team.

For crying out loud, just look at Serena's Pokemon, half of them don't even have a full moveset! At least Barry was pretty challenging and Hugh was cool even if his teams weren't so great.

I'm sure even trainers in Gen 1 had full movesets, at least that far in the game, surely... looking at all the tables in Bulbapedia, even Blue's teams had full movesets by Silph Co. Serena and Calem have three Pokemon who only have three moves during their fucking POSTGAME REMATCH. This is far more than just genwun nonsense, it's just straight up bullshit.

Same can be said about every gym leader and the league champion, the E4 had acceptable sets but can't be taken seriously with only 4 Pokemon. Kalos has the biggesy list of obtainable Pokemon in game and noone thought about abusing it in the league or gyms...even Ruby/Sapphire league and gyms were more threating despite sometimes showing up to two species ofa Pokemon per team. XY Kalos is a shit challenge in terms of difficulty.
