I read this article when It was posted in that meta by the way
And am a fan of 2005 GC format due to loving control in card games, and I still found it to be the fool's notion in that regard. It basically read like someone who had been ill prepared for a possible thing that could come to bite him in the butt, and as such thought it was something that isn't healthy, IE the scrub mentality.
Rogue strategies will always be decent to good due to surprise factor, and if a deck is remotely viable and can stomp on you is an especially important reason to make sure you don't leave yourself open to it.
ODFs are also bad in a competitive stance because they favor the players that understand the decks playstyle alone rather than multiple playstyles. Magic hasn't had issues with competitivity in diverse formats, it doesn't make much sense to assume that YGO should be able to handle them as well.
And also, you're technically wrong, but only if you dig into the past. Gen 1 and 2 were roughly what is described, and even as late as gen 4 (and possibly now), team Cores were fairly short in variety, with the other pokemon effectively being the 'techs'.
