Seriously tthat's one of the stupidest things ever, even when I was a kid I figured they must have meant that when it dies, its tail flame goes out, and not that it literally dies BECAUSE the flame went out. Fire Red's Pokedex is the only place in the games where it says the latter, every other dex entry seems to imply the former, Red and Crystal even say that it just spouts steam when it's wet.
