Read the damn thing, the "edgyness" has never been its main appeal. It has likable characters, a decent storyline and follows the games mechanics much better than the anime. Playing the game does reward you when reading the Adventures manga.
Regarding the "edgyness and darkness"... it's overblown. The series is as violent as any other shonen, it just impresses some people because of how violent it is compared to the anime (which isn't hard considering even Kirby gets to be more violent at times). It's as violent as you would expect from a story about monster fights and as serious as a good story for kids needs to be, which isn't that much since it has LOTS of camp.
As far as I know, the only chapters that people actually dislike are Emerald, BW, and Yellow to some extent for going full-retard with the protagonists. The BW chapters are specially bad since those are the ones where the "dark for the sake of it" really applies, since they tried to keep up with the supposed maturity of the games (which didn't work for both).
