In the dub, past events have motivated Piplup to stay the way he is and didn't want to lose his memories with Dawn as a Piplup or something.

In the original, Piplup didn't want to evolve because he was afraid he would end up like Dawn's Mamoswine.

Did they ever give a reason why it was always out of it's pokeball like they did with Pikachu? In the early episodes it wasn't out all of the time, and then at some point it was never put away.
