Banette, Mawile, etc, weren't that popular before they received Megas. Kinda popular sure, but not that much. Now they generate a fan base, toys, inclusion in movies, etc. They generate more money, which is clearly your line or reasoning.
So it makes little sense to not include the others in a trio, it's just singled out pandering for panderings sake.
