Why not just go the distance and make 6v6 battles. Now it's basically just a normal RPG.

And chances are, this will be the new officially supported mode, it's an even number of active Pokemon and it would have the entire party of four out at once, think of how fast the battles would go, two turns at most.

How about a 1v5 mode. The lone pokemon is highly powered up to make up for the fact that they're fighting alone.

I'd like to see a battle system like the one in Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker where you battle with three Pokemon at once and those three are the only ones in your party. And wild encounters could be anywhere between 1 and 5 wild pokemon at once. Basically the typical RPG fare. It probably wouldn't work in the main series games but it's something I could see implemented in some kind of spinoff

Dragon Quest Monsters 3DS already has 4v4. And it has monsters that take up multiple slots in battle. Pic related is Grand Estark from DQM 2 3DS, he takes up four slots.
