One, it has aged quite a while, the last game was released nine years ago (Emerald) and while DS Lites can still be found in some places, generally the more recent Nintendo handhelds eschew GBA compatibility entirely (DSi (XL), 3DS (XL), 2DS). So there are some compatibility issues there. Gen 3's graphics also do seem a bit primitive in comparison to games now, and lacks things like a day/night cycle and other, simpler things like Vs. Portraits for the important trainers. In terms of Pokemon selection, you can get the weather trio in HGSS, yes, but that was two generations ago. Plus, a revisit to Hoenn would mean an excuse for Deoxys and Jirachi events. And finally, with the Latiasite / Latiosite, or whatever the Latis Mega Stone is called, that hints that we'll at least be seeing those two Hoenn Legendaries soon enough.
I think there's some factors that push towards a remake, so I'd hope for it, but I would prepare myself to expect anything.
