Alright, what timing for a new thread.

It's up to you. You don't have to start the challenge till you get Pokeballs if you don't want to, no one really cares as long as you don't abuse the fact that you don't have them yet.
I.E. Power Grind before you get them so you can get a catch and a high level starter.

This is what recklessness born of overconfidence breeds.

I knew that no-one else save Buck - who still isn't Bibarel - could do effective damage against Roarke's team, so I figured I would let Olaf take point. Got through his Geodude and Onix with little trouble, and the only moves of note they got off were Stealth Rock and a single Screech.

Turns out that bit me in the ass, massively, when Cranidos appeared. Olaf just hit Lv. 14 and learned Razor Leaf, so I used it, immediately putting Cranidos in the red with only a Leer in retaliation. Assuming his potions were spent on his Geodude, I used Absorb for the kill, but he healed again. I didn't think it was a big deal and just went to Absorb what little health was left, but he survived, and promptly proceeded to one-shot the poor Turtwig with a Headbutt.

Really shoulda used Razor Leaf again.

I sent out Feldspar despite being three levels below him, who was capable of tanking Headbutt well enough and a Rock Throw put Cranidos on the edge of death again. To my amazement, though, he used Pursuit of all things, which happened to be a crit...and you can guess what happened there.

Mittens cleaned up. That battle was a mess if ever there was one. In order to avert a similar calamity, I have been grinding like crazy in the lead-up to Mars. I'd forgotten just how slow the battles can be sometimes.

Team is currently in missing man formation, as it were - I've slathered honey on a tree in Floaroma, but I have to wait a good five hours for that to bear fruit. Hoping for a Cherubi.

Sorry for your Stoutland - losses of your earliest members are always the hardest.

And across previous runs, mainly those in the sixth generation, my starters have never been able to escape fainting at some point or another, usually due to either unforeseen occurrences or my own overconfidence...seems as though I can't escape that curse, at least not yet.

Still, the time for checking on that tree is drawing near - hopefully I'll get something good out of it. All the best to you, as well.

Just defeated Roxie but experienced my first two deaths. I had no good way to defeat croagunk and was relying on Bibarel to bulk it until he got good boosts. Of course drain punch crits and takes out Bibarel. Then I sent out meowth to try and get some flinch hax. He managed to paralyze croagunk but I forgot Roxie hadn't used her super potion. Used bite instead of secret power thinking I would kill it and she one shot me. Herdier ended up saving the run by getting 3 work up boosts on Seviper after murdering croagunk. RIP meowth and bibarel the unexpected bros.

Well, here I am now. Got through Mars without much trouble, though it was a damn good thing I had a spare Pecha Berry or Buck would no longer be with me. Zubats are pesky.

Just in Eterna, probably going to grind for Galactic and Gardenia on Route 211 and in Coronet. Haven't gone in the latter just yet - waiting for tomorrow. Who knows, I may get fortunate and nab a Cleffa.

Morpho there in the box is what I got from that tree...and given his Brave nature, I was dearly hoping for a Silcoon. I suppose there's future trees, maybe. I'm also not sure how much longer Buck can last...but I'll see what happens.

I think if anything you lucked out with cascoon. Beautifly is hopelessly frail, so you don't want it to be slow.

Alright, finally finished grinding for Opelucid. Have a few members trained on the side, including swapping Zebstrika for Skarmory (mostly due to Zebstrika's moves being resisted by dragons or just weak)

I wish I had toxic for Skarm, but I can't get into the depths of seaside cave yet, so whatever.

The grind continues. Working on getting Nirvana on everybody else's level. The Cleffa I caught was Careful, as well, and since Sp. Def was the Cleffa line's best stat prior to Gen VI...may give her a shot.

Thinking of toying with Lola in place of Buck for a while for the sake of experimentation - a Buneary who's Lonely isn't half bad. Buck is the strongest attacker on my team, though, so I suppose I'll mull it over.

As for Morpho...well, Dustox might be useful.

Also, added rules, I suppose - implemented the Dupes rule because a lot of the early areas in D/P are fairly samey with regards to what they offer. Luckily, at least so far, the game's been kind to me.

My philosophy is that you can catch multiple mons in one route if the route is clearly segregated, with different encounters in the same type of tile.

Personally, I'd go for something I'm not familiar with. Murkrow would probably wreck the early game, though Phanpy might be alright.
Something with 2 evos is probably best though since it gives the best progression.

Two evos and I jump right to Deino, Slowpoke, Shinx, Gastly, Turtwig, Nidoran, Poliwag. There are just a lot of options, but I'm not sure which ones would steamroll the game and which ones would provide a rough challenge.
