What are some battles that really highlight the strategy the Diamond and Pearl arcs had. I know they had a lot more of switching Pokemon mid battle, but for the most part I didn't really get the sense of strategy. I did, however, not watch many of the episodes and I remember his battle for the first gym badge and his last fight against Paul.

Well the rival in XY was pretty shit, just like in gen 3, so Ash probably won't get one. Not sure about Serena getting a rival either since she doesn't really have a goal yet.

Maybe they are setting up Alan for an eventual confrontation with Ash later on in the series.

Kanto:
Pros: It's one of the more original takes on the pokeworld. It doesn't really follow the game and makes it sort of more believable that this is a world rather than a game. Even though it wasn't the original intention, it is believable for Ash not to win here. He did not deserve it.

Cons: It's so kiddified that it would fit right in with the random junk that shows now. There's a huge gap between Fuschia and Cinnabar that will be impossible to endure.

Orange:
Pros: An entirely original region. The most interesting ideas you'll possibly ever see in the anime.

Cons: Still kiddy, despite the above, it's really forgettable. It's really little more than an extension of Kanto.

Johto:
Pros: Finally, real gym battles. Yeah, I don't really count Orange. It also has a few memorable fillers. Also, Ash and Gary's rivalry finally comes to a head.

Cons: The most bland episodes you will ever see. It was plain by this point they had run out of ideas. Even the climax seems rushed.

Hoenn:
Pros: Less filler due to the matter a second quest was introduced. Ash finally gets to have more evolved pokes.

Cons: It's still really boring when plot isn't happening.

Battle Frontier:
Pros: After a while, there is very little but plot important junk going on. We finally see battles vs. legends.

Cons: It's slow to begin. The filler at the beginning is just as bland as it was for two regions now.

Sinnoh:
Pros: The best antagonists to date. The most evolved team to date. Even the filler is interesting after a certain point. It's all topped off by the greatest battles.

Cons: It's also slow to begin, it feels a lot like Hoenn when it starts. It is like this up to Eterna. Dawn feels like a rehash of May, only she is more human. Her rivals are not as interesting until Ursula shows up. Also, despite the kind of challenge Paul represents, Ash learns nothing from it.

Pros: At least most of the gyms are won legitimately.

Cons: Where to begin...this entire arc is a retcon. Ash is stupid again for no reason. His companions do nothing. None of the rivals are interesting. TR goes nowhere and their characterization is shot. Top it all off with the most stupid League imaginable.

Episode N:
Pros: It's short. There's very little filler.

Cons: It's repetitive. Everything focuses on that mind control device and it always gets destroyed. Stupidity still reigns during the lulls.

Decolora Adventures:
Pros: Nothing of consequence happens at all, you can perfectly skip it.

Cons: IT'S LITERALLY FLIPPING NOTHING.

Kalos (preliminary, although it may not be long before I give up entirely):

Pros: NO MORE STUPIDITY, THANK ARCEUS.

Cons: Nothing you haven't seen a thousand times already. Serena doesn't even have a purpose other than apparently teasing a ship that we all know is going to fail.
