I'd really hope for some trickery involving Wallace and Wally technically being the same name, like everyone mentions a Wallace as the current champion, and maybe Steven or someone describes an epic battle with Wallace the former Water-type gym leader turned champion, so that even new players are caught up when it turns out Wally is the current champ in future-Hoenn.
But actually they have different names in Japan. What a waste.
