I'd fucking love Sceptile to be in Smash.

Unfortunately, the Pokemon quota has probably already been filled. It would be fucking cool for Sakurai to acknowledge the Grass/Fire/Water Triangle in Smash, but I feel like it's mostly just wishful thinking. Also, even if Sakurai did want to add more Pokemon, chances are it's too late into development to take cues from the upcoming Hoenn remakes. Like, Mario Galaxy came out before Smash, but we still got Mario Sunshine stuff in the game. Smash is usually a bit behind.

That being said, I can't wait for Mega Sceptile; shit is going to be insane!

It seems like they've been planing this for awhile though, so it's possible Sakurai was already in on it. At the very least, if he was planning on putting in Charizard and Greninja and then asked Gamefreak which grass starter he should put in, I'm sure they'd instantly say "Sceptile!"

So far we've only had gens 1, 4, and now 6 represented in smash. 1 already has Pikachu, Charizard, and almost certainly Jigglypuff. 4 has Lucario, 6 has Greninja. It'd be nice to even things out by giving gen 3 a representative, especially with the remakes revealed. Sceptile would clearly be the best choice, and it would complement the elemental starters already in the game,

They've got Fire and Water starters from 2 different gens, and Sceptile seems to be the most likely grass candidate from the remaining gens, since he's the only one that's bipedal, and now especially with the Gen 3 remakes coming.

Personally I would want Torterra as the grass rep, but I know that's a long shot.

I would say Smash already has Charizard for a fire rep, but that didn't stop them from doubling down in X&Y, giving you Torchic and eventually Mega Blaizken and making Charizard the only gen 1 to get 2 Megas.

You may as well make a comic with Toon Link licking Ganondorf's tears. One rep from a franchise doesn't automatically deconfirm all other reps from the same franchise, friend. Mewtwo still has a good chance. Certainly more than Sceptile. :)

Yeah, that's what I mean, they don't follow any actual pattern when it comes to Smash. A lot of people assume Sceptile can be playable just because it's a bipedal grass starter but that doesn't really mean anything.
