It's a weird pattern, but in a way it would make more sense than Diamond and Pearl as the next remakes. Just like Ruby/Sapphire, they are only playable on the GBA, which is very obsolete at this point and incompatible with current hardware.
That said, the world in those games in so incredibly limited compared to the more modern Pokemon games. They would be forced to expand the world of Kanto, which would probably result in massive fanwars between genwunners and purists.
