Gen III is my favourite gen, but being pre-split hurts it, and all the conveniences of later gens (like being able to run in buildings) are painfully absent; that's why HG/SS are also a close contender for me.
Gen III's world and features, coupled with vivid 3D graphics, all the amenities of modern Pokémon (like Destiny Knot), and online integration are a winning combination, though. They'd have to try very hard to fuck this up.
