Personally, I don't forget pokemon, especially since I play randoms a lot, but I sometimes don't register in my head that something is a pokemon within the pokemon world, if that makes sense. Like, I obviously know Hitmonchan and Cherrim are pokemon, but when I thought about playing with them in amie or them fighting in the anime, it was a mindfuck
