Gen 3 was my first pokemon game. The moment I realize that I can just use one pokemon to beat them all is the moment the game became easy. There has been only two pokemon games where I raised a team of 6. Fire red and Pokemon Y. Pokemon Y I had 3 different teams of 6 before scrapping the other two and going with the last one before I reached elite four. I had to ev train them and everything.

It shouldn't be that hard to make a gts system that is useful.

Letting us search by desired pokemon instead of offered pokemon would be a huge start. If I could go in and say "I have this squirtle, what can I get for it?" would save a shitload of time, especially during that early endgame "I need like 600 pokemon" phase.

Obviously they need to fucking do something about legendaries. I think an "exclude legendaries" search option would work. It would at least be a step in the right direction.

In X&Y if you don't use the EXP Share/Amie/Lucky Egg you end up very underleveled as well.

when i got to the E4 I was in my low 50's, the highest bein level 52 i believe.
