Wasn't aware enough of the industry at the time to know for sure, but I think they were probably doing about as well as they are now; PlayStation was wrecking Nintendo 64, and the Game Boy, while still the market leader by a long margin, wasn't doing well enough to stop people considering Nintendo to be failing.

It was a joint project that Nintendo backed out of to focus on the Philips CD-i. Not really sure it's accurate to call it Nintendo's "idea", but they certainly had a lot of input on it.

That depends what would kids play instead of pokemon and weather or not they would still play it on nintendo. Perhaps it's other games got overshadowed by pokemon? for example, perhaps instead of /vp/ we will have /hm/, one of nintendo better games.

I think that to say Pokemon saved Nintendo would be to underestimate the power of the franchises they already had back then. It's probably true that the GBC might not have existed if Pokemon did not save the original Game Boy. I do not feel this becomes a problem until the matter becomes that the DS would not exist, as the DS is the largest thing that kept Ninty afloat at the time, and the handheld is STILL the largest thing keeping them in the game. Ultimately, it would mean that Nintendo would've suffered a lot sooner and it's possible that they might not have recovered from the failure of the Wii.

The reason "core" gamers aren't getting it is that they lost trust in the Nintendo brand due to the Wii. That, and most are migrating to PC, but that's another matter.

At the very least the handhelds are saving the company.

Besides, just the fact that Nintendo is pretty much the ONLY company who still lets you do multiplayer with people you know IN THE SAME ROOM like some kind of bizarre Übermensch with actual, honest-to-god social skills, makes the Wii U worth buying. It needs some more games besides Wind Waker and Nintendoland (and maybe some support from western devs), but it's still a fun thing to break out at parties.

The contract terms were supposedly unfavorable for Nintendo (no further information has been given on this as far as I know). You usually call for a renegotiation in those cases though, not bail right after the other company has made the deal public.

The costs of keeping Wiis and software in production are negligible. They're a constant. The 3DS launch was supposed to make up for Wii U and 3DS R&D. Then it didn't.

Wii U broke consumer trust by branding a Gamecube as a Wii successor.
