>>19140417Hard to say. Gameplay has more or less been a upgrade of Gen 3's system ever since RS was released, and that was back in 2002 (J) - 2003 (Rest of the world). By 2017, that is nearly 14 years of minor upgrades (X/Y being the first major shake up since Gen 2).
As far as what they could add:
-Special moves (Like a limit break)
-New level cap of lv 150-200 with another EXP revamp.
-More move slots (Which they looked at before, and dismissed. Would be a tremendous shakeup).
-Change in Mega Evolution mechanics (Which I see happening eventually)
-Amount of Pokemon you can have at one time.
-Dual item slots instead of a 1 item limit (Likely as a response to Mega Evolution).
-New types
-4 on 4 battles.
-Advanced Pokemon merging, like Kyurem.
-Dual abilities.
Some of these I see coming true in the next generation or two, and some I see being in place 10-15 years down the line. I think once sales start to flatline is when they will start changing the formula.
