I did it /vp/, I figured it out.
OR and AS aren't sequels, but they aren't entirely "remakes" either.
OR takes place at the SAME TIME as Sapphire, and AS takes place at the SAME TIME as Ruby. So while old you was taking on one team, the new you is taking on the other. This is why we won't have an Emerald remake.
At the end of the game, you battle old you for the title of champion, or maybe Wally (he'd have been the one to take over as champion after old you (or something)).
In doing this storytelling method, we get all kinds of background details and shenanigans that we never got with the original games, but somehow it makes the stories mesh together, filling any plot holes of the original games.
