There was almost no warning to it, and all people got as an explanation was that he was going to work on his solo channel some more.
That explanation worked for a while, but then Arin stirred up shit on the Grumps subreddit when he said they shouldn't mention Jon on there anymore because he doesn't want to be associated with the show anymore.
Jon heard about this and set things straight by telling people he did want to continue to be recognized and that he didn't know where "they" were getting it from.
There's been a ton of little things since then that stir up mini shitstorms as well. For example, both Jon and the Grumps had panels at a convention late last year, yet there's no pics of them together at the con at all.
