I always fucking wondered that shit. I don't remember how old I was when I first saw that, but I was kinda young (I'm 18 now).
I remember he talked about the glory days when he adventured as a trainer, so back when I played it I thought "what if that staircase was some tunnel to other regions?" or whatever.
I also thought FR/LG had access to Hoenn because of the altering cave being in both Kanto and Hoenn.
