What exactly is "momentum"? I hear it being thrown around all the time in competitive discussions and praised as if it's the strongest thing in a battle but what exactly is it beyond something you get from U-Turn/Volt Switch?

Keeping the upper-hand in battle.

The more often your opponent has to re-think their moves the more momentum you have.

VolTurn is a delayed switch which means you can see what your opponent's answer is to your certain pokemon and then operate from there. Baton Pass is also a delayed switch.

I always thought of it as being ahead of your opponent in battle. If the opponent wasted their turn switching and you U-turned and got a switch to an appropriate counter you have momentum because you have an advantage over the opponent.

What are the point of 'support' and 'defensive' pokemon?

It's a 1v1 fight, what is a support pokemon supporting, and how is a defensive pokemon accomplishing anything?

This all comes down to team synergy. Having BALK is always a good thing since it can change the MOMENTUM of a battle greatly. As soon as someone gets a few boosts and starts cutting through your pokeon you're going to wish you had that Mandibuzz or Furfrou around.

I've never played any multiplayer because I never gave a shit to raise IVs, I figure everyone online has perfect IVs so why even bother.

Literally the most competitive battling I've ever done was Gym Leader Castle

I like klinklang, charizard is alright, golurk feels like I could do better, Vaporeon I feel like I'm not using right, and Absol can't take a single hit to save his life. He's got full IVs and still dies the same turn I try to set up sword's dance.

I guess this is min-max damage, the damage varies every hit, so you need to know min-max to know if you can OHKO something or how many hits you may need to do it.

in chess, if you are attacking the king/queen from a solid position, the opponent has to play defensive instead of working on checkmate.

In tennis, it's a good volley that forces a weak return

in starcraft, it's attacking with a particular unit that forces the opponent to waste resources countering (dropping in a couple of dark templar, for example)

if you imagine a battle as a fluid set of movements, it's an action that allows for a better winning position while forcing the opponent to adapt from a weaker position.

minimize your weaknesses and maximize your strengths. I haven't heard it much in competitive Pokemon discussion, but I think the general idea would be say, taking a fast but frail physical attacker and putting all your EVs in Attack and Speed, while having Adamant nature because you don't need Special Attack. This way you're minimizing your weak defenses by hitting first.

I'm not totally Smogon or anything, but it seems that a check is just something you can use in a way that can take a hit from or stalemate another mon.
A counter is a mon that can not only take the oppositions hit but possibly nullify it and actually strike it right back effectively.

Normally, a check can revenge kill whatever it's trying to check, while a counter can switch in take a hit and still kill whatever it's countering.

I personally use Assvest Moldbreaker Excadrill to break Rotom-W, since it can take a Hydro Pump just fine. As for actual counters, I'd say it'd have to be a guts user or a special attacker, I've seen Rotom-M beat Rotom-W pretty reliably.

say you've boosted your speed and attack to maximum. you don't need smarts, even if your move is not very effective, it's got momentum behind it, it's less likely to fail

put it this way: the more you do when you don't necessarily have to do anything, will make the harder parts easier

That doesn't mean you shouldn't care about using pokemon that are good.
Klingklang has a terrible movepool or else it would be great. Raichu is very underpowered. Golurk has nothing going for it, Absol is pretty gimmicky as it only works with a critical-focused set and vaporeon is not bad as bulky water but you could do a lot better.
My suggestions would be as follows:
>Klingklang-->Metagross w/ Ass vest
>Raichu --> Rotom W
>Golurk --> Trevenant
>Absol -->Mandibuzz
>Vaporeon -->Jellicent or Tentacruel
