The first four gens have children as protags, this is backed up by the Unova kids being older than anyone before. The fact that there's a traditional age to start your journey is an idea that caught up,
mostly thanks to the anime, but it makes sense in the game context. So following Red's age, that would make everyone 11 when the games start.
The Unova guys are teenagers. 14 seems to be the most popular number, beause of many reasons: their design (they don't look that much older, specially when we see them grown up in BW2),
the Special manga (which is a sperate canon but sometimes it gives people ideas), and the fact 14 is a popular age in Japanese anime for teenagers to go in adventures (eg Sailor Moon).
The XY friends are believed to be 16, because Xerosic's notes during the Looker missions claim that Emma is 16 years old, and the game suggests that the PC is at least as old as she is.
Not touching ORAS until it comes out. The main games never acknowledge the side games so most people don't consider them canon.
The math for the ages at the end of BW2/XY then becomes:
Kanto and Hoenn guys: late twenties
Johto and Sinnoh guys: early twenties
First Unova guys: late teens
Second Unova and XY guys: early teens
Not considering N in this because he's an odd case. But many people believe he's actually older
