Now that they've said that, I feel like they're going to be something completely different like Omega & Alpha evolutions or something. They love saying it's the most obvious thing at first (Wow, is that a new Mewtwo forme?) then coming out later with something completely different and unexpected (No, it's Mega Mewtwo! Mega evolution is a thing now holy fucking shit).

They're clearly not mega evolutions. There are no aesthetic differences other than some markings. Look at kyogre, it literally looks exactly the same other than some markings. If it was a mega evolution, it would look much more different instead of the exact fucking same. This whole thing is a ruse.

They called it a "New Pokemon" and then commented on how it looked a lot like Mewtwo. In the lead-up to Platinum, they showcased a bunch of silhouettes of "new Pokemon" that were noted for their vague resemblance to Rotom that turned out to be the Rotom-A formes.

The Japanese marketing always uses the word "new Pokemon" about new formes/etc of old Pokemon. Black Kyurem and White Kyurem were referred to as new Pokemon too, and the Daisuki Club specifically called the Pokemon on the ORAS box art "new Pokemon" despite all other official sources going the "they look noticably different from the normal Groudon and Kyogre, don't they? I think they may NOT just be the normal Groudon and Kyogre" route.

It's clear that there's a difference from the originals. But it's the most subtle change in any Pokemon other than maybe Active mode on Xerneas.

I'm not fully convinced that these are Mega Groudon and Mega Kyogre. Omega/Alpha formes with a power increase along the lines of making Drought/Drizzle last forever seems more likely to me.
Then again, I've been only about 50/50 on predictions for the past year, which is pretty low compared to how well I did in Gen V. Shit, I basically called BW2 instead of Grey from the start.

No one wrote off anything. People were arguing whether if they were megas or not the moment they were revealed.

They already did this with Origin Giratina in the Platinum box art. Showing new forms in new game boxes is not new

Sure the differences of these 2 aren't the biggest changes, but we've got half a generation of mega forms to use as our basis. Besides, before XY was announced, the idea of megas in the first place would've been seen as complete weeaboo bullshit. The very presence of mega forms breaks all "precedence" arguments.

From an art design point of view, I would put my money on the fact that the artists were tasked to design megas for them, saw that their designs were pretty complex to begin with (comparitively to other pokemon, anyway), then decided that making a standard "powered up" form based around the idea of the glowing lines that they've had, instead of needlessly reworking their designs. Works with the design, works with the lore (super ancient beings having untapped power is a pretty common trope in storytelling), and it looks nice.

It would be detrimental to their work for the designers to restrict themselves based off of needless "rules" that existed only because of the trends of 1 period of design.

I should add, that it's possible that they're new fors as opposed to Mega's, but it's more thematic to make them Mega's in the gen that mega's were introduced. I mean, they're already teasing them specifically AS mega's, so its safe to assume that they're not just trying to lie to us, and are just using light marketing tactics.

I did argue that their proportions were merely stylized and that they had the same silhouettes as before, and that that was evidence against the formes being Megas. Hell, I might be the same person you remember arguing against on the 7th. If I am, I'd like to clarify that I'd pretty much conceded these to be different from normal Groudon and Kyogre, but not different enough to be Megas.

It's not like they haven't produced radical variations for complex designs in the past. Altered Giratina isn't exactly the simplest of Pokemon forms, after all. And there was that whole "Virus Groudon" madness in the Jirachi movie.
Until the day comes where the Mega reveals blow me the fuck out of the water once again, I'm going to stick to the idea that these are closer to "Overdrive" formes than Megas.

Sure, some things will stay similar throughout the series, but being close minded about differing possibilities (despite what one might think) is the obnoxious part. The past trends that we observe are only that: trends. Gamefreak doesn't have some almighty rule book that they look upon when designing the games.

Could they be just forms? Yeah, totally. But assuming them to be and swearing up and down that they ARE until we know is naive. This isn't so much directed at you, by the way, but just this entire board in general.

Kyogre and Groudon are somewhat unique in that they're the only box legendaries without signature moves. I reckon ORAS will have them with a signature move that changes their forme.

All of those had signature moves when they debuted. Reshiram and Zekrom still do, since no other Pokemon can learn Blue Flare or Bolt Strike through normal means. Since both Ho-oh and Entei now learn Sacred Fire by level-up, Ho-oh no longer has a Signature Move.

Technically, V-Create doesn't count as Victini's signature move since it can only be learned through Events and Rayquaza can access the move in the same way.
