I went back for a second playthrough, and decided to just really dive into it. Catching as many pokes as I can on each route, fully exploring, etc.
First, it made me realize just how much variety Kalos had. But also, how many of the routes had a lot more to them.
Exploration was generally very rewarding, and that's what I love about some pokemon games. The thing is, most of the routes can be passed through without a second though. You have to take the responsibility of really exploring each route as you go.
