what pokemon game should a new person to the series start at? I have a GBA, DS, 3DS, so older games aren't an issue.

I want to catch all the pokemon btw. I recently discovered I love collecting shit in video games but I never played pokemon before.

HGSS so you can skip FRLG but still see the region. then you can wit for the Gen 3 remakes in november then play the rest in order

This can work too, plus you'll be able to get used to the phys/spec split immediately since it was introduced in Gen IV.

but Kanto in HGSS is empty and boring. It took me less than a few hours to get all gym badges.

I'd go with FRLG, OP.

I recommend this. the phys/spec split is the biggest change in pokemon history and I can't imagine playing without it. it just adds so much more variety.

Kanto in FR/LG is just as boring. Gen 1 was extremely bare bones and barely had a plot attached to it, and the dungeons were god fucking awful.

without the physical/special split, pokemon is so boring that its not even fun. you are forced to use moves that specifically cater to your pokemons type, and pokemon like flareon are practically worthless without the physical special split.

The variety the split caused make pokemon a much more enjoyable game.

dungeons are a generic RPG term. I hope to god you are savvy enough to know what I'm talking about

Rock tunnel, mt. moon, and silph co are WAY too dull and long. they are the opposite of fun.

I didn't care about that at all when I first played FRLG or Emerald, and I still had fun. It's just that you are already used to the split and find it hard to play without. For someone new to the games, it means nothing.

plus you are still able to catch all the kanto pokemon in HG/SS. hell you are even able to go to kanto and battle all their gym leaders and such. sure the kanto section of the game is much shorter, but thats because you are a higher level, they cut out a lot of the boring bits, etc. and like what I said in >>19199926, kanto is not the greatest region... in fact I would say its the worst, so having a condensed form of it is preferable.

do this:

HG/SS -> Platinum -> B/W -> X/Y

You can probably get all the gen 3 pokemon from those games, but just in case there is OR/AS coming out that will certainly have all the gen 3 pokemon.

You will need access to trading, but you have multiple DSs so that's no problem. Also multiple playthroughs are practically required thanks to starters being a 1 per playthrough deal. OR/AS will finally release us from the problem of not having every starter ever available from the beginning, though (I count getting the gen 1 starters in X/Y as getting them from the beginning, which is better than having to obtain them from the end of HG/SS).
