When I was a kid I just enjoyed the games so much, not knowing about IVs and EVs and that stuff.
I then found out about the competitive side of the game and got into it back during Gen IV because everyone else did it, and I was pretty good. It just got really old, boring, and tedious and I quit playing for about four years, hating the game I used to love. And the majority of the competitive players were, and still are elitist pricks.
I just got back into the franchise, catching up on what I missed with Gen V a few months before X/Y came out. Even though I say I don't give a fuck about competitiveness, in my mind those little things like natures and stats still unintentionally bar my vision when playing the games, making it harder to enjoy than I did back in Gen III before I learned of the competitive side.
tl;dr: Competitive elitism ruins pokemon.
