Nice trips.
For some pokemon, the opportunity to attack first outweighs the disadvantage of being locked in a single move. Also as long as you can switch, once sent back in it can attack with a different move again. So if you are able to score a revenge kill for example and you decide to switch back in, there's basically no turn lost for the switch and you just got a free kill.

Not necessarily attack first, but it gives your Pokemon a 1.5x speed boost which will outrun a lot of things depending on your Pokemon's speed tier. Its a Choice Band but for speed.

I never got to play any of the Pokémon games that came after Emerald, so my goal over summer break is to "demystify" all the "new" Pokémon that everyone except me is already used to, so that I don't end up embarrassing myself whenever I don't know what Garchomp is. Obviously I'm gonna have to play Platinum, but would I have to go through Black/White as well? Seems like almost no one talks about the Pokémon from BW...

Also, is there a romhack of Platinum to where I'll be able to catch everything without trading? And not like a retarded romhack that spams all the old Pokémon all over the place, just one that lets me play by myself.

Swords Dance, Brave Bird, Knock Off, Quick Attack with Focus Sash is okay-ish. It's fortunate in that it's one of the few things to learn Knock Off without tutors, even if it's not lucky in any other way.

Is team composition something we can ask about here? I've been trying to put together a team, and I've got three pokemon but I can't decide what to put in the last few slots. I've got a MegaAggron, Sp. Def Sylveon, and Thundurus/Def. Zapdos. It all seems pretty bulky, and I dunno if I wanna just fill it up with even more defensive pokemon, or balance it out with some powerhouses instead.
any advice on the matter would be appreciated.

That depends entirely on the needs of your team. Go test different metagross spreads on a battle simulator and figure out what moves and evs best suit your team. Check out recommended ev spreads from smogon

Here are a few big things to do
1. Check out the victory roads smogon forum section. This new forum section allows only posts and threads from knowledgeable people with invites. The content there is really good for getting good at the game

2. Check out the ou tierlist thread in 6th gen ou section on smogon forums. Read up on all the big ou threads there.

3. Look at the usage statistics for your tier and make sure your team is built and ready to handle the top 10 popular pokemon.

4. Using a damage calculator have each top ou pokemon attack each pokemon of your team with all their moves from all the popular sets. Have your team attack the whole tier the same way. Although tedious it tells you exactly.how your team matches up against the tier and tells you what unique approaches you may need with that team to get past some stuff

The more you know in advance the better the team performs

6 perfect IVs is really hard to get, even with the updated breeding stuff it takes too long for most people. Also, unless you're running a mixed sweeper, you won't get any use of having both perfect Atk and SpA so people tend to choose one or the other as their non-perfect stat.

Its completely possible to catch one in the wild at total random with good IVs. In Black I managed to catch a Vanillish with 16/31/30/31/7/29 in the ice place. Its just really really unlikely to happen. Breeding allows you to mess with the odds and make it easier.

If you go to Kiloude city (which you can only access after beating the Elite 4 + Champ), and go to the Pokemon center, there's a psychic trainer standing in the left corner, near the dressing room.

Talk to him, and allow him to 'judge the intriguing potential' of the mon you want to know the IVs of. He'll say what the highest stats for the mon is, "this pokemon has very good attack/def/speed/whatever!". If his last line of dialogue is "stats like those, they simply can't be beat!" the stats he listed are perfect (31)

Sorry if that doesn't make a lot of sense.

Half your team is weak to fire (Trevenant, Excadrill, Venusaur)
Half your team is weak to water (Volcarona, Excadrill, Charizard)
A fast ice/water pokemon could sweep 5/6 of your team save for Empoleon.
Water Rotom could take care of 4/6 of your team.

I'm curious as to why you're giving speed EVs to Venusaur. To set up with Growth?

Only if you catch it in the wild with a custom ball. If you want good IVs/nature and the custom ball, you could try the friend safari. Either that or pokegen one or use powersaves to change the ball on one you bred.

I-I have a stupid question regarding DPPt.

Every IV adds (level/100) points rounded down to the stat. So at level 100, a stat with an IV of 31 has 31 more points than a stat with an IV of 0. At lvl 50, the difference is 15. To account for natures, just multiply by 1.1, 1, or 0.9

For pokemon with Truant, like Slaking, you can teach him just one move. Giga Impact. It's already a strong move and it gets stronger from STAB and Scarf.

As long as you are in Mt. Coronet both Magneton and Nosepass will evolve when leveled up. It doesn't matter where in the mountain. They'll also evolve at the Spear Pillar (peak).

I happened to see that my local game store has a small tournament that I'd like to participate in. I know each gen changes the gameplay and changes the balancing of the pokemon. I managed to trade over my old party into storage for later, so they are the most battle able right now. My question is whether I'd stand any chance using previous gen pokemon, or has new moves and things like mega evolution changed the competitive scene much? Should I even attempt the tournament, or would I most likely just get my butt kicked with my lack of knowledge and adaption to the new games?

By extension of this: How are IVs calculated when the pokemon's level is downscaled like in the Battle Maison? Does it just get a decrease down to what it would have at level 50? I heard this works kinda differently.

Yeah. Basically the stat calulation formula scales the values based on the level, as level is part of the stat calculation formula. The game just sets the level to 50 and recalculates the stats for that level.

To clarify, the formula is {[(2xBase)+IV+(EV/4)]x(level/100)+5}xNature. When scaling down levels and stats, only the level modifier is replaced in the formula. EVs and IVs remain the same, although their influence on the overall stat is scaled down as well.

As long as they have the same IVs, EVs, and nature, there's no difference between a pokemon at level 50 and a pokemon at level 100 that is scaled down to level 50.

Is the Ability Capsule really entirely concretely permanent? Has anyone tested it extensively?

I have a shiny Reuniclus that I gave Magic Guard with it, but I'm constantly worried that it'll switch back somehow when I heal or trade it up or put it in the PC or stupid stuff like that, even if I have no reason to worry.

Aside from the stone emporium, the only reliable way to get more is to get better at the secret super training levels. If you get a good enough time, you will usually get the stone for the challenge. For sun/moon stones, having high-leveled pickup pokemon is very useful.

If you're insistent, although Female Meowstic learns a lot more moves offensively, Male Meowstic's Prankster can be used in offensive ways too. For example, you could have it be a Specs/Scarf set with Trick, which is an egg move. Your best bet is to think about ways you can use Male Meowstic's advantages over Female Meowstic in an offensive manner rather than a defensive.

Go and find out what horde battles you can encounter that has ev's you want
Turn on the EXP share, use a high level mon to ohko them
Rinse and repeat. Even faster if you have Pokerus and Macho BRace

Moonblast
Psyshock
Focus Blast

Timid to get the Geomancy off quickly. SpA EVs since its most powerfull STAB move is Moonblast, made more powerfull by Fairy Aura. Psychock and Focus Miss obviously for coverage.

The stab boost is calculated as well. So, for example, Aerialate boosted return starts at 102 BP, then is multiplies by 1.3 because of the ability and then by 1.5 because it is now a STAB move, resulting in it becoming like a move with 198 BP
