Everyone in a Spanish-speaking country grew up knowing the words "gato" and "perro." It's why people in those countries won't say "cat" or "dog," like you state.
However, people in those countries did grow up learning the names of Pokemon, which are the same in English and Spanish. Therefore, people in either languages won't have trouble with it.
If, for some reason, "cat" and "dog" translated to Spanish the exact same, "cat" and "dog," people would use it, wouldn't they? In Pokemon's case, that's what happened.
