Ash's Heracross is stronger than you think. It was able to neutralize Darkrai's Ice Beam with a non-STAB Hyper Beam coming off a base 40 sp.atk.

I suppose, if the Darkrai had max Def IVs and EVs and a boosting nature while Heracross had 0 IVs and EVs in Attack with a weakening nature, it might have survived maybe one or two.

The anime does not appear to account for physical or special attack stats specifically becuase there was an instance wher swords dance powered up what would be a special move and harden decreased the damage taken from what would be a special move.
