How does one approach the story modes in these games, anyway?

Like, is it best to stick with one team of two or three monsters, or pack a full team of six and rotate them out as you catch new ones?

I'm asking because it's been twelve hours and I'm still stuck in fucking Cerulean City.

I just catch Pokemon as I go along and keep the same ones until it's full. By the 2nd gym I usually only have 1 or 2 Pokemon.

Leveling takes fucking forever is you try to use a bunch of Pokemon, so I usually just use 4 or 5 as fighters through the whole games and carry one HM slave around.

I usually have a full team of 6 to use through the whole game by gym 3.
Unless a Pokemon I get really sucks (Purrloin comes to mine first time playing Black), I really don't like replacing them, partially out of attachment, mostly out of laziness

Just use your starter. It should be around level 80 by the Elite Four, at which point you can unload all your Rare Candies on it and steamroll the fuckers.

Personally, I usually rock a team of 1 or 2 until midgame. I pick up a 3rd at my discretion around the fifth or sixth gym, and then may or may not catch another two during the remainder. I almost always end up hitting the E4 with 4 high level badasses and two HM slaves, destroying them, and then catching my remaining two members during the postgame.

I just build my team gradually as I find pokemon I like and that seem useful.

Some come and go of-course.

In GEN1 I had my Blastoise of-course, and Pidgeot because he was one of the first I caught and consistently useful. Mr. Mime was from an in-game trade and so leveled up quickly and was a beast with confusion.

Snorlax and Pinsir were just so exotic and cool looking. Same with Magmar.

In Gen IV I decided on a whim to raise a zubat because I'd never done that before. Got an awesome crobat out of it.

Luxray because I wanted to try out the new Pokemon and he was a neat looking, and powerful, electric type.

I raised a blissey for the same reason I did Zubat. I'd just never tried it before.

Octillery was because I was so surprised to find one. I had never seen that Pokemon before (even though I played through Gold). Or I didn't remember it.

My Gyarados was shiny... so I had to use him. He was also strong.
In all cases my full team took a while. I didn't have a full six until late in the game.

That sounds almost as dull and tedious as constantly stopping to level-grind.

Honestly, what kind of sense does it make to drop the player into this huge area with upwards of a hundred different monsters to catch and fight, and then effectively limit us to using four or five of them?

Going into the E4 the first time, most of my team was around level 33-37 and I had just caught Lugia (45) and was using it since I needed pokemon to fly.

I got all the way to Lance's second Dragonite even though most of my pokemon were horrendously underleveled since I had a counter for basically everything.

Moral of the story: if you want to use a full team, make sure it's somewhat balanced type-wise, unless you feel like grinding.
