After a while of stratagy making, he'd strait up ask you if he should use (for example) a Breloom, a Peliper, etc. The Pokemon he chose to ask you about matched the strategies you suggested he used.
This would happen for three different Pokemon, and after a week or so of real-life time, this guy would be sitting in the multi-battle room waiting for you to pick him.
Of course, you could have chose the other shitty NPCs that come standard with each multi-battle, but their Pokes were usually shit (I recall Geodudes and Wingulls).
