Is there an advantage to keeping your pokemon unevolved, /vp/?

I was finishing up Pokemon Y a few days ago, and I looked through the evolutions of my Fennekin. I liked his cute little fox form, and I loved his Braixen form. They were really fun to have around. But then I saw his retarded Delphox form and I just instantly went NOPE.

I wish I could've kept him unevolved, but I don't know if that carries its own advantages or not.

The gameplay advantages are that they learn moves earlier, can use eviolite, and can use certain special items like Pikachu's Light ball.

But if you're not battling competitively and just want to keep them unevolved for your own enjoyment that's totally your choice.

If you don't plan on battling competitively, just keep your Braixen a Braixen. It'll still be good in-game, and it'll learn moves earlier.

I keep hearing competitive, so I assume I DO lose something by keeping him unevolved? Moves I can understand, because I can simply use a tutor and give him fire blast and flamethrower and just work from there.

Oh you definitely lose things.

Their total stats are way lower in their 1st and 2nd forms. And of course if their ability changes that can make a big difference.

Bulbapedia is your friend. Compare the base stat totals, abilities, and movesets (including which moves AND when) on a few different stages of the same family.

Unevolved pokemon just take less exp to level. That's it, they will be shit if you pit them against anything fully evolved around the same level. But XY is so fuckin easy and evolved mons on random NPCs, go for it OP. Delphox is shit anyways, at least keep it cute. Also, anything works ingame, I could do a solo Bidoof run because of how easy it is.

I've actually been doing alot of research on Bulbapedia, but they keep switching the information because the mods who write the pages are retards. From what I gathered there, the only huge thing I lose is that Braixen would never become a psychic type.

No, all Pokemon of an evolutionary family require the same Experience to level up. That said, unevolved ones learn Moves earlier but have far lower BSTs, and often don't have access to certain TMs that their evolutions can learn.

Unevolved Pokemon take the same EXP to level as their evolved forms.

Pokemon uses Total EXP vs Max EXP to determine what level you're at. If your level gain became slower when you evolved, your level would actually go down when you evolved.

As an example, both Weedle and Beedrill need 1,000,000 EXP to get to level 100.

As far as the topic:
You lose potential level up moves (which can be relearned if you evolve later), and your stats are much lower, and as such it's much weaker. There are exceptions to this, but you could count those exceptions on one hand.

I wouldn't have such a problem if Delphox wasn't agiant retard with his HURR DURR UM UH WIZURD outfit. Even Greninja looked cooler. No wonder he got chosen for Smash.

You lose stats and some moves.

There are some cases were lower evos will actually learn moves that higher evos won't, but these are rare and often irrelevant. Breloom is one example I can think of, where Shroomish will learn Spore.

As far as what you lose, stats. Higher evolutions will be stronger, by a substantial amount.

Don't let this bother you too much though. Competitively yes, this will make it impossible, but for normal playthroughs you'll be fine. You might have to grind for some extra levels though.

But there are a lot of people that run playthroughs with Pikachu (as an example). I know a LOT of people in Emerald preferred Grovyle and left it that way. So on and so forth.

You can leave them unevolved but they have lower stat totals and may miss out on certain moves and have a lower BST. Pokemon single player is easy as sin though so you don't have to worry about that. Using an everstone makes keeping them from evolving that much easier.

Disadvantages are unevolved pokemon have awful stats and are harder to use in battle, which can make leveling up a pain. There are also some special cases where pokemon can only learn certain moves after they evolve (ex: arcanine learns extremespeed naturally, growlithe can't learn it at all).

Whether or not you should do this depends on the pokemon. Use references to make an informed decision.
