People just like shoving abilities onto shit when it doesn't make much sense thematically. See: Sap Sipper Swampert. The JP name for Protean can also translate to Phantasmagoria which is related to shifting illusions. The only other Pokemon that would make sense to have Phantasmagoria is other ninja or Pokemon associated with illusions, like Zoroark.

oh I'm well aware of that. Part dragon was was a start since it fits and won't fall apart as easily except ice. But the majority of dragons get a good dose of special attacks. Imagine it with draco meteor or overheat?

Blaziken isn't even allowed this year because it's not Kalos-native.

And even then, it's not very good in doubles. Luke and Gengar are only kind of good mega mom is disgusting though.

Blaziken is overwhelmingly powerful in singles, which is why it's OP and banned.

Blaziken isn't good **in doubles.** No one uses it.

Luke and Gengar are good but not as good as they are in singles. I wouldn't even call them top threats.

The only one that's cancer is mega mom, but it doesn't have a spread move so, again, it's not as good as it is in singles.

This is REALLY simple.

It's really hard to make something that's broken in doubles, just because of how doubles work. Like if Mega Gardevoir kept Pixilate Hyper Voice, got 100/100/100 bulk, and Nasty Plot, that would probably be broken. But mega mom isn't broken, because it can only ever target one thing. It's just strong and kind of centralizing.

Gengar is seeing more usage because he fucks mega-mom over with WoW, and the current VGC meta is weak as fuck to taunt. Hydregion is seeing use also because of Aegislash, and Gengar is being used more, not only that but Hydregion also hit like a truck.

Luke is rare to see, but his popular set is Jolly with Close Combat, sub, protect and flash cannon as that hits harder than bullet punch.

The new fairies are pretty awful yeah. Sylveon's like the best of the bunch and that's fucking sylveon. Florges is just Sylveon lite. Slurpluff is shit and Aromatisse isn't good anywhere but the TCG. Don't even get started on Carbink or Dendenne.

But then stuff like Azmarill, Togekiss were good before and are relevant fairies now and stuff like Gengar gets Dazzling Gleam

Fairy as a typing is pretty great offensively and defensively. Fairy types introduced as fairy type so far have been sub-par.

Serperior really wants Dragon typing, Superpower, Draco Meteor, Earthquake (seriously every other starter gets it), and Dragon Rush.

It has the makings of a good movepool with some neat boosting and status moves, but like three actual attacks.

I think all the GenV starts could have been a lot better if they actually had interesting typings, but no, have a pure Water type, a pure Grass type and yet another fucking Fire/Fighting. It is almost if they didn't like the starters themselves at all.

Imagine how much better they would be if they were these types:
Serperior: Grass/Dragon
Samurott: Water/Fighting
Emboar: Fire/Dark
