Dragon would have been favorable, though even keeping Flying would have been alright. Dark does nothing but hurt Gyarados's defenses, as one of the best things going for it is its Fighting resist.

Doesn't even make sense. The only dark move it gets is Payback which is shit because you want it to be fast.

Gyarados should've been retyped Water/Dark back in Gen 2. Now it's too late to change that, but the Mega can get the typing Gyarados deserved.

Besides, Water/Flying is excellent and switching to Water/Dark is devastating.

Mega Gyarados is already a top 3 mega, it doesn't need buffs.

You don't HAVE to mega evolve right away.

The amount of games I've won because people switch in their Conkeldurr only for me to just DD up as regular Gyarados before mega evolving is hilarious.

Dragon-typing would have been completely fucking broken with his bulk.

Dragon would make sense according to the legend behind its origin, but Dark is fine too since it fits "the atrocious" species title.
Water/Dragon Gyarados would be a Kingdra on steroids, I'm not sure I'd like it.

The resistances Water/Dark grants make it much better than Water/Dragon. STAB Dragon isn't too crazy anymore, especially if it's restricted to Outrage on a Dragon Dance set.
