1. digimon is anime-centered, and the digimon anime is quite childish.
2. digimon didn't have a smooth liftoff as pokemon did- the first games waren't very good and it didn't manage to build a game franchise as solid as pokemon.

People did think of Digimon as a rip-off and expected it to work like Pokemon so the shitty games were quite a disappointment and people dropped it.
