Pokemon got localized/dubbed earlier -> Kids thought it was a rip-off although both franchises got developed at the same time
It also had very heavy Nintendo backing and marketing, the Gameboy games with the trading and fighting your friends shit quickly made it popular

The games were always rather mediocre, stayed the same and had small upgrades over time, the anime was utter shit.

Digimon basically only got big after they did the Myotismon arc for Adventure, then saw that it was a hit and basically improvised everything from there, no actual marketing/business strategy behind it.
The anime had some god tier seasons and some bad shit, varying quality.
Some good games like Digimon World 1, some shit, varying quality.

Conceptually Digimon is better, but Pokemon is bigger because nostalgia, autism and mainstream popularity

Adventure or Tamers.

Adventure is basically the base of the franchise, its actiony, decently paced and has a fair bit of development, no great climaxes or downs, just a straight joyride.
Really good season

Tamers is the child of a insane and skilled horror-writer, the entire thing starts slow building the shit out of characters for about half the season and being quite slow, before spiraling into death, murder and destruction.
Its the best season

Do not watch it under any circumstances dubbed unless you speak Kraut, the English dub is horrible and ruins characters and plot points, if you ask I'll provide links

digimon has a very shounen plot. granted, it's more mature than pokemon, but it's still innocent.

Well that's wrong. Even in Japan Digimon came later.

Pokémon's development finished in 1995, but got delayed to February 1996. Anime begun in April 1997.

The first Digimon piece of hardware, the Digital Monster (a spin-off of Tamagotchi - The first Tamagotchi came in November 1996), was released in June 1997 and the anime didn't begin until June 1999.

So no, Pokémon didn't get "localized/dubbed earlier", it always came earlier.

If you knew anything about Digimon, you would know Machinedramon is made up of parts of other machine digimon, it's knee caps are from Andromon, there wasn't all that many round machine parts in season 1.
