The Porygon episode put some children in hospitals and pissed off a few parents, but the majority of kids just continued watching the show and buying the toys, I doubt it came anywhere close to killing the franchise. It's more likely because people complained about Jynx.

It's mostly annoying when it's included in something totally unrelated, like maybe a franchise about kids going around collecting monsters and making them battle to the death. Gay Pride Parades are events specifically about gay people.

But the point is that being trans, being gay etc. are all things to yet be normalised by society. It's not so much shoehorning social issues in as just making them a normal think in the Pokémon universe. It's one out of god knows how many NPCs in every single Pokémon game to have brought it up.
