In an attempt to liven up the thread, I have a few questions.

When it comes to giving 'mons more bulky EV spreads for doubles instead of the 252/252 of singles, how do you determine how many points is enough? Are there certain benchmarks that need to be reached? How do you determine which benchmarks need to be hit by which 'mons? And lastly, when it comes to making a pokemon bulky against either physical or special moves, is it better to go full HP, full Def/SpDef, or a mix?

depends what kind of mon you have.
for example - rotom w has no business staying in on charizard Y - buuut it IS always nice to have the spdef EVs to live the solarbeam.

and you can easily reach the physical benchmarks by running bulky intimidators on your team. gyarados and scrafty are great intimidators.

for some perspective, 0hp.0def charizard can live -1 garchomp's rock slide. ez.

Usually I try out the team with 252HP/252Atk or SpA or whatever for a while, then decide which Pokémon I really need to counter, and give it enough defences to survive that.

If you can get that in through scarf, damage rolls or bulk, I'd say it's very much worth staying in.

kek and lel. assuming you're scarfed modest 252 - charizard will just KO you with solarbeam while you don't with t-bolt. not to mention, there isn't a single 4 hp modest charizard in existence - the standard in VGC is 212 spatk (guarantees all crucial OHKOs) and 156~ speed (to outpace smeargle, not relevant in this format). This means they have about 124 evs to invest in bulk, which they do.

so, you'll beat shitty timid 252/252 spreads with chip damage, but not a well designed spread by an experienced player. not to mention, you won't ever out speed charizard's partner, venusaur, under the sun, who will love to suck your juices right out.

rotom heat on the other hand, has plenty of reason to stay in on zard Y....

Because in VGC, the base 100 speed tier is shared by Kang, Charizard, Staraptor and Salamence. There's not point trying to outsanic each other since charizard doesnt really need to and timid lacks a lot of power. Not to mention, base 90s rarely bother maxing speed because the base 100s are big in this meta and will always outspeed them. not to mention, if they are max speed, they're likely scarfed anyway.
Max speed charizard is redundant and you get much more milage out of having more bulk.

Even if there are max speed base 90s, charizard typically needs answers for its outs anyway. Charizard always has intimidate and wide guard support for rock slide, and doesn't care about everything else. So what if that nidoking outspeeds you? What's it gonna do? If its physical, it's probably been intimidated already and won't KO. if its special, you have nothing to worry about.

It's definitely a part of it - but it's not as though this thread has been void of replays. the gym leader threads have a small community which means more often than not they chat about things other than battling over there.

A lot of the drop-outs have also been from bad players who have done poorly in round 1 and 2, and then just never respond or reply because they're not motivated enough to keep playing. Most our drop outs are lowly ranked players

And I really don't see much that I can do about that! To be honest, I don't consider this competition to be terribly succesful and I probably won't be inclined to host another in the future.

On the other hand, I think an actual Live competition would be great - where everyone jumps into IRC or a chat room at a specified time and plays over the course of a couple of hours - but it'd be a nightmare to find a time that suits everyone.
Oh well, it was fun.

That's probably a part of it - we've never had an early - or on time - round, and the competition has dragged out longer than it needs to as a result. So, it probably went on while people had their exams etc on.

In the future, I'll need to have stricter time management. I was thinking I'll give three-day windows for games to be finished so we can rapidly progress through our rounds - but I'm worried a lot of players may not be able to match up in three days. Thoughts?

Hmm. The more I think about it, the more I'm convince that this could have been a lot more successful if it had gone faster. But this puts a great reliance on players, which so far haven't proved to be reliable at all.
I might be able to let people play their r1 games into r2 if I did the bracket by hand however - hey, this is falling into place!

Sadly. I've tried to attract non-competitive players - to date, only a few have stayed - shout outs to nips, chocobo, Luna, the recently departed Lobo and Xeno, who have more or less improved over the competition, especially Xeno.

I also wanna say thanks for the support you good people are showing. Running the competition up to this point has been seemingly thankless and reading your comments in this thread has motivated me to not only start a second competition, but to make it run as smoothly as possible.

I'm brainstorming all kinds of ways that I can set up a challonge-less bracket, which means I can extend games into a second round if I need be, in similar fashion to the way Callum does it in the monotype competition. I'm committed to running a prudent competition next time, with much less delays than we've had in our prelims.

He didn't - but he's been consistent and on time every other week. He's honestly one of our best players and I know that he's had exams recently so I didnt want to drop him like I did with Layne and Ashlynn (two players who never got a game in on time and who never responded to me) so I've decided to just forfeit his game.

As he is one of the top players who will be competing for the top cut, I understand that it would be bad if he dropped completely, but I have faith in the guy. And I've got a couple of players who have agreed to help me do make-up games if need be.

Never been a fan of meowstic but it's a rather interesting mon. I feel like Klefki does a lot of it's sets better though. Meowstic does have some interesting moves though like Quick guard, misty terrain, and fake out. So it's definitely a good choice for a support mon. Not sure about a good spread since i've never really used one though.

That's the attitude of a bad player - blaming the pokemon and not the player. He's not the only guy using standard stuff and to be completely honest, all the non-standard stuff has just been not done right, like Parham's attempt at Darmanitan shenanigans, Luna's double mega rain team, Kyle's attempts at trick room, etc.

Learn the basics before you try to do anything tricky you guys! Start with the dumb stuff like Kang, Mawile megas and Garchomp, Rotom, Amoonguss, Ferrothorn etc and all the other 'standard' pokemon to get a proper feel for the game. You'll firstly have more room to make better decisions and secondly will learn how the meta pokemon work.
THEN you should apply personal touches as you go. It's important that you guys understand why you shouldn't protect in front of Raichu, why you should always bring an answer to ferrothorn in team preview, why you should always pack intimidate if your team is weak to garchomp - and the best way to learn is to actually use them.

So, no, I won't trivialise Xeno's efforts just because he uses standard pokemon. They're standard for a reason!

Since sleep lasts 1-3 turns, and assuming that Aegislash was put to sleep before attacking (ie the sleep inducer is faster than Aegislash), I would use KS on the first turn, try to attack on the second, and then either attack again on the third turn or use KS to turn back to shield form.

I this way you should be able to always take hits it shield form, and even do some surprise damage.

However, all this depend heavily on the situation, and don't forget that if you wake up on a KS and your opponent's sleeper is still alive, you'll turn back to sleep before doing anything on the next turn.

Of course if you're using a sub Aegislash, subbing is by far the safest and most useful choice.

Staying in shield form and King's Shielding every turn might feel safe, but chances are if you're being put to sleep you're probably behind in terms of momentum and advantage.
I'd suggest trying to make more aggressive plays, like attacking in-case of a suprise wake. More than anything, when you're in this position, you /need/ to read your opponent. If they look like they might ignore your sleeping pokemon (happens often) then you need to be aggressive. Try attacking while still in sword form, for example.
But if they're specifically trying to eliminate aegislash, they're probably trying to set up the board for a threat in the back. Consider a switch after burning a turn or two of sleep.

On the subject of sleep - make sure you kiddos are always prepared for amoonguss! In VGC, it's almost standard to carry a lum berry to beat smeargle, but I'm noticing not everyone carries one.

Oh well, since sometimes I test my teams in the Unranked section of the Battle Spot, I found that facing a Charizard X when you're expecting a Y can put you in a very difficult situation.

Gaining some bulk in defense and losing the x4 weakness to rocks can turn weaker rock slide in 3HKO (or even 4Hs probably, I should check) and let you surprise kill lots of things.

But well, once the surprise is fade Char X, can't really do much by himself, being a physical attacker is suffering, and you either use Flare Blitz or stick to the far less powerful fire punch, leaving you with a huge lack of power.

You get WoW, Roost, Tailwind (as you said) and other pretty much useful moves, but I think that the team should support the mega and not vice versa.

That said, try out support Talonflame which is actually pretty cool, with WoW, Quick Guard and priority Tailwind, and even Taunt.
It as a kinda bad defensive typing, but has some nice core resistance, and is surprisingly bulky.

You'll be surprised - bulky support mega aerodactyl has seen some success in this season. It's been seen with Swords Dance Garchomp and the like.

Also, offensive Charizard X usually utilises Dragon Dance on the turn it expects to be taking thunder bolts. I personally t-wave all charizard as soon as I see them.

May as well ask - what do you, my lovely playerbase, think of babby's 1st dubs clause? It banned moody, dark void, effectively all the legendaries gen 3 move tutor mons (anything that cannot be bred).

Should it be kept for the next competition, or should we let the players use whichever pokemon they like (that is allowed by XY flat rules)?

Perhaps we could allow back certain legendaries & have some votes on what to ban. Things like Zapdos could come back and Cress would possibly stay gone if people don't like it.

And also a suggestion, to make things even more interesting, and keep our meta unique, perhaps we could allow certain legendaries that are banned on cart but not really so OP like Celebi and Keldeo for example.

That's generally not an attitude I want to encourage - especially since these are all legal, competitive pokemon at the end of the day. I didn't have this rule so players could avoid playing what they didn't like - I have it so that all players can be on an even playing field.

Seeing all of your responses, I really feel that the purpose of this rule was lost on the playerbase. Even though the genies are faggots and moody is not a fun ability, they're part of the game and they'll be part of any live Nintendo competition that you may want to play in the future - jading yourselves from them will only really hinder your playstyle development and experience in the future, which is not what I want in the end of the day.

Thank you for your responses however, it has given me something to consider for the next competition.

I was quite happy with it. There was a 2-3 hour wait before it got started, which a lot of people have complained about, but it was the same last year so I wasn't that surprised. Once it got going, it was great.
In terms of gameplay, I was kind of surprised about how few Kangaskhan there were, and particularly how rare Smeargle was, after I remember hearing people shitting themselves over it earlier in the year, so overall a lot more balanced than people give VGC credit for.

But yeah, I agree, Reflect would probably be more useful generally; harder for the opponent to get rid of, and potentially stops both of your opponent's Pokémon.

Charm is actually better than reflect - it halves their attack stat as opposed to halving the damage you take.
-2 attack is less damage than reflect. In general, like OP keeps saying, you can't mash on screens - you have to doctor an EV spread to specifically take advantage of them. That's less so an issue with charm.

If I ever use Meowstic, it would be exclusively for T-wave and Charm.

I was just looking into Cobalion - it looks like it's a decent supporting pokemon.
Helping hand, thunder wave and quick guard are all it has, but they're all very strong moves on the right team. It's attacking stats are mediocre, base 90 both ways with too few specially attacking options to consider a special set, and base 90 attack means not even 252 adamant Close Combat is guaranteed to one-shot mega kang. But I feel like this is supposed to be a supporting pokemon which can still have a strong offensive presence - its 91/129/72 defense stats are p. good.

I've definitely gotta try this one on the battle spot ladder sometime.

To my defense, we started with 33 players in our bracket, and we're down to 16 now.
That's a lot of drop-outs. There's a large element of that which I can't control, but I also think that the tournament taking so long may also have discouraged players from sticking around.
But then there are implications on how to have faster rounds, and so on... Well, hopefully I'll work out the kinks for the next tournament - provided we even have enough competitive players interested in joining.

Yeah, I realize. It sucks. That's why I said we should have a lot of people sign up. You'd have to make threads for the sign ups really appealing and persuasive I guess somehow? And there will probably be more people signing up in the next anyway since it'll be summertime by then. Much better time for a tourney. And the more people we have, it won't be so bad when some drop out.

I really do think that just summer will be enough to make the next tourney better tbh. I have good hopes for it, if you do decide to host another one.

Kinda, Espeed is not a tutor move, it's an egg move, but can be learned only by from other Dratini/Dragonai/Dragonites, so you need to transfer one from gen V anyway.

The IVs would probably be random since I lend my 6IVs ditto away, but it'll have Ddance, Iron Tail and of course Espeed as egg moves

Why not copy and try different teams online? Italian, German and English VGC nationals have happened so far, I'm sure you'll find some nice team reports of mons you can try. Try out the whole team for size, then make adjustments as you go.

I usually find one gimmick Pokémon, try and make a team around that, and then improve the team iteratively, often taking out the original gimmick.
For instance, my current team was originally for exploud, but it hasn't had one in for months.

I remember trying to make a VGC team around boomburst. Soundproof Mr Mime, Telepathy Gardevoir and some trick room staples. Sadly, the team got shat on so hard by mega mawile it hurt. Fun times though.

Looking at your lead, Trick Room + Water Spout was obvious, he should have used Fake Out on Cofa, or at least double target Stoise with sucker punch on turn 2 to weakener your water spout.

Also, I think Overgrown is a bit better on Torterra, since you're going to use recoil moves.

Now that this is over I'm probably going to enter into that international challenge in a week and a half.

My current team is m-manectric / AV azumarill / togekiss / whimsicott / garchomp / aegislash.

What's a good replacement for togekiss that can do redirection and paralysis and has lots of bulk?

Also I found that I never really ended up using whimsicott unless I was facing a TR team. Any ideas what I could replace it with? Preferably something with taunt and/or WoW.

Since these are swiss rounds, you get more points depending on who you defeated. If you beat someone who's only beaten low scoring players, your tie-breaker will be lower.

At least, that's how it SHOULD work. I've heard a lot of things about Challonge's tiebreaking, none of it good.

Anyway, with that said, it hopefully shouldn't be too much of an issue since the top cut will be only 4~6 players, leaving room for about just two 4-2 score players to make it in, with our four 5-1's in Daniel, Shunt, Niall and Devon guaranteed a place in the top players.
Xeno and Heather are the two 4-2 players currently in the top six - however, Parham and Matthew are due to have their game tomorrow. Either one of them will have a higher tie-breaker score than Heather once this game is over, unless it's something ridiculous like a draw.
So the winner of their match makes the top 6.

With priority, Garchomp and Rotoms everywhere one can clearly see why paralysis is not as good as before.

That there's no Cresselia or Thundurus-tier spreaders don't help either. Most things are too frail and the few ones who can para-spam would rather do other shit.
