Deo-D was banned last gen, and all previous gens, specifically because it supported HO way too well. There's no reason to think it won't get the boot this gen, too, unless you're a total cynic. The only reason it's not banned yet is because it, by itself, is not a broken pokemon, but banning it would be a means to nerf an archetype.

Yes Drizzle was a shitfest and banning it would have solved the root of the problem, but instead they banned stuff that was broken under rain (Manaphy, Tornadus, DrizzleSwim) because Drizzle could be used for offensive and defensive reasons. While it may have been misguided to not ban it, that's more out of "we want to see if Drizzle can be balanced" than "we want to intentionally ruin the meta." Drizzle and drought affected a lot of variables and improved the viability of offensive and defensive pokemon; this is as opposed to Deo-D, who is almost exclusively used on HO.

Am I the only one who has NEVER been happy with the metagame in Pokémon?

There always seems to be SOMETHING that people jump onto in order to have "the edge" online, be it hazards, weather, or priority.

Now I am not saying that on its own, its necessarily a bad thing, but when an entire Gen will lean on these "strategies", it gets stale very fast. Creativity gets stamped out fast and it isn't fun.

I remember the developers saying that they plan on "simplifying Pokémon" next Gen, not only in designs, but also by actually REMOVING things we currently have. They specifically mentioned items, but do you guys also think they'd consider changing Pokémons abilities to sort of balance out the metagame?

I think it's pretty clear that they aren't happy with the current state of it, and they've changed abilities in the past to make Pokémon like Scolipede viable. So would they, for example, NERF a Pokémon this way? I can see Talonflame losing Gale Wings for sure.

If anything Knock Off helps stall more than hurts, so long as you also use it
If the opponent used knock off on you you lose your Lefties but you still will have reliable recovery with Roost or Softboiled or whatever. If you use knock off on an offensive pokemon and knock off its Choice Band/Scarf or life orb you severely cut it's damage output

If I recall correctly the only thing that currently disappoints Game Freak is Mega Kanga usage. Talonflame might be difficult to deal with if you're not carrying a check or counter, but Kanga is certainly living up to the hype.

That interview though, I think, has been the first time they've addressed having a concern about this kind of thing, and it just gave me a feeling like Gen 7 was going to be a lot more balanced and fresh overall.

But I could be looking into it too much and getting my hopes up for nothing, we'll just have to wait and see.

It won't be for at least 3 years until Gen 7, so until then, we'll have to rely on OR/AS & Z Move Tutors to change the metagame a little.

Talonflame isn't broken.

I'd much rather see the removal of Choice Band/Specs, and maybe life orb. Things just hit too hard without any turns of set-up, which makes it harder to play defensively. And maybe stop giving Swords Dance to everything.

I do run knock off, or try to on most teams, but the fact that there's a more spammable dark type move, especially with the type chart reworked, that can cripple (or mostly cripple) mons that rely on lefties is annoying.

Knock Off absorbers are an interesting niche though so it's not all bad.

In hindsight, I think my example of Talonflame was a bad example. I was sort of extending my concerns of how much focus priority has this Gen.

I do however agree that Choice Items and Life Orb should go.

Choice Items should honestly have gone along with Gems this Gen. And as autistic as it sounds, I personally dislike Life Orb simply because it contradicts the whole "care for you Pokémon, they're your friends" message the game delivers. It's an item that makes your Pokémon give 110%, by actually hurting it to the point where it will eventually pass out from the pain, even if its opponent doesn't hit it at all. Sounds like an invention straight out of Team Rocket HQ. I know it's dumb, but items that contradict the main themes of the franchise shouldn't exists, even only for competitive play.

There's a number of things that have basically no counters, or exceptionally few good counters. Plus you only get no counters if you take into account all the sets it can run (SubToxic, Crumbler w/ Flash Cannon or Head Smash, Balloon,) whereas a handful of things, like Mega Gardevoir and Medicham, have one common set that has one or two commonly used counters at best (waifu, with Voice/Shock/Focus Blast/Wisp, doesn't really have any good switch-ins: anything it can't blow up with Fae Scream of Death, STAB Psyshock, and Focus Blast, it can just burn as it switches in and then switch to a bulkier teammate. Medicham has Aegislash and Sableye, Slowbro if it doesn't have Thunder Punch, and then garbage like Dusclops and Cresselia. And even if you have a counter, it can just use Baton Pass as you switch in and get a free turn for Bisharp.)

While Aegislash has 60/150/150/150/150/60 stats, this only means it can act in both an offensive and defensive capacity. I have seen more than a few stall teams use SubToxic set because it checks a lot of stuff. While it's teetering on the edge between broken and just really powerful, it sort of reminds me of Gen II Snorlax (except not as broken and centralizing): it's a good mon to use for basically every archetype, and while it sounds broken on paper, in practice it's not very difficult to beat. It's just a really good mon. A suspect test wouldn't be unreasonable though.

I would be genuinely surprised were it not even suspected, let alone banned. - Can't Taunt it because Mental Herb / Magic Coat
- Can't defog it because it's fucking Deosharp

That's because stall actually takes proper planning and team design to effectively cover all threats.

HO is the ultimate scrub style of play. The strategy is literally just suicide lead into set-up sweeper into revenge killer/next set-up sweeper.

there's literally no reason not to run HO unless you religiously run stall, which is usable enough not to be complete arse
balanced teams of any kind are basically dead at this point, there are literally only three playstyles in the entire meta, only one of which is common (shitter deosharp HO)

It's rarely like the dream of being a pokemon trainer, battling to be the best. It's just a bunch of math and meta shit with Smogonsomething every gen.

That said, gen4 was what I hated the most, because of Garchomp. Kanga may be an overpowered pos but because it's a mega not everyone will use it. Garchomp was EVERYWHERE. If you ever went into the Wifi battle tower.... ugh.
