Hell the two don't even battle for the first time until after the Orange Islands where Ash has far more accomplishments under his belt and Gary beats him anyway with his shitty Eevee.
Paul was far better improvement but I still wish they'd stop setting Ash up with rivals where he loses every time until their final match, a more even rivalry would be much preferred.
