Ash has no fucking idea what Koffing can actually do, because firstly, he never had the chance to actually scan one, and secondly, the only one he fought in the past never fucking did anything except use smokescreen to create a distraction. Pretty much it's entire existence was used as an excuse to give Pidgeotto some screen-time.
