-Every language
-Shiny and regular
-All legally obtained
The ULTIMATE living Pokédex.
It would have to be spread across several different games and Pokébanks. The whole world would have to pitch in.
Do you think a project like this is even theoretically doable?

Theoretically, of course it is.
How easy it would be to do it, is another matter. Just having each Pokemon in normal and shiny variants already uses up more than half of the space that a single Pokebank account allows.

Now multiply that by the number of languages that Pokemon is in, and add up the few different formes.

I thought about putting that in the OP, actually. But by that point I realized that if we were choosing which EVs to train, we might as well pick a nature to go with it. And then I realized that natures and genders and all that were a whole other can of worms I didn't want to open up. So I left it in this simplified forme.

That's an absurd number, especially considering half of them are shiny.
Except, I suppose, the ones that are specifically programmed to be unobtainable in shiny form, like Victini and Xerneas and Yveltal.

My final number include some more obvious gender differences, like Pyroar and Hippowdon, the guy who counted included some of them. Regarding the unobtainable shinies, just forget them,like Spinda ,or pokegen them.

You know, if we eliminated the "living" aspect of this, we might actually be able to consider really doing it... If we just wanted to fill an in-game Pokédex to absolute completion, it would just be one of each language and then the shiny and non-shiny forms of each gender. Also, we could employ the far less expensive option of temporary trades or "trade backs" for Dex entries. Still a ton of work, but... Significantly less. Almost a manageable amount.

If you eliminate shinies, this is feasible.

Don't hope to ever complete this with shinies. For example, how likely do you think it is that anybody in the world has a Shiny German-language Ocean-pattern Vivillon?

In my own Bank, I have a fully-legit English living dex with every storable non-shiny form for every non-legendary except Spinda and Vivillon.

Multiplying that by 7 languages isn't very hard if you have a bunch of people. Events can be a big problem if you don't have enough people in the right places.

Vivillon isn't too hard to collect: you can change your 3DS country and restart your X/Y save file, catch/hatch a Scatterbug, and deposit it. I haven't done this because I only have one copy of the game and don't want to lose my save.
Replaying through the beginning of the game 126 times (18 forms * 7 languages) would be very boring, but even if you only have one 3DS it's definitely doable within a week.

Not unless you count the new version exclusives in X/Y: Spritzee, Swirlix, Skrelp, Clauncher, Xerneas, and Yveltal

The reason for this is: (excluding events)
Every Gen1-3 Pokémon is catchable in at least one Gen3 game and also at least one Gen4 or Gen5 game (even without using Pokewalker, Grotto, or Dream World).
Platinum lacks Glameow, Stunky, and Cranidos or Shieldon, but all fossils are obtainable in Gen5/6 and Stunky is in Kalos.
The only Unova-dex version exclusives from B/W that aren't also in B2/W2 are Tornadus and Thundurus, but they're available in Dream Radar.

Matching up all the version exclusives to minimize the number of games you'd have to play is still fairly complicated.

In Gen3, you could complete the National Dex with only Emerald, Leafgreen, Colosseum, and XD. All the R/S/FR exclusives can be found in Orre. Leafgreen in particular was needed for Slowpoke.

Extending on that post a bit, Unova has a related problem:
Rufflet requires White or White2 or friend safari
Vullaby requires Black or Black2 or friend safari
Reshiram requires Black or White2
Zekrom requires White or Black2

You can't catch all four of these by yourself unless you play at least three of the four Unova games.

Ignore that, you only need two, but they have to be the same pair, so you're essentially playing the same game twice.

It has to be Black+White or Black2+White2; you can't use Black+White2 or White+Black2.

I'd say this is just as bad as having to play Pearl for Glameow.

718 base Pokémon.
Megas doesn't count because it's an in battle form. Same for Castform, Cherrim, Darmanitan, Meloetta, Aegislash and, actually the opposite, Xerneas.
Shaymin is timed so i don't know about storing it.
Furfrou has a similar problem due reverting to its original forme when in box.
Arceus, Giratina, Genesect have the same problem due to being item related.
Don't know about Burmy, as the forme will change as you take it to battle. Same for Deerling and Sawsbuck, but i think you can do it since in this gen they dropped seasons.
Vivillion is probably the biggest problem, since formes are region locked. You should hope for someone playing those regions with a different language from its country.

844 - 24 = 820 roughly for 2 because of gender makes it 1640 (actually i recall it being something around 1300-1400). Multiply this by Shiny (x2) and language (x7). 23k is big.
