Are kids today too dumb to play Pokemon?

I gave my nine-year-old sister my old 3DS, as I had bought the XL. I also gave her my favorite Pokemon game, Pearl. This was a couple weeks ago; she has yet to make it past Jubilife City. When I told her that she needed to get to Oreburgh City and that she should check the map...not only did she not know how to access the map, but she didn't know what a map was.

My sister is known as one of the smartest children in her class.

I don't understand. When I was two years her junior, I breezed through Blue version like it wasn't a thang (I let her try Blue version on my computer via emulator, which she also struggled with). Same thing with SIlver, Crystal, and every other main series game I've played.

I know that there are complexities in the game that I wouldn't really expect a kid to easily grasp (like EVs, IVs, egg moves, etc.), but this is too much.
