Why the hell does this thing rank so high in Pokémon popularity polls?

I know most of you will jump up and yell "Genwunners!", but this thing ranks even higher than badass Gen I mons like Gyarados and Scyther. It looks like freaking Barney the Dinosaur.

It was the first pseudo legendary, the first dragon type, somehow manages to be both cute or badass depending on the fan. It also is a great pokemon in competitive and has the bonus of being featured in the anime as the pokemon of champions that knows a fuck ton of moves and as Iris's rogue that beat not any Mamoswine but Dawns Mamoswine one on one

Makes sense. I can imagine that it would be less controversial if people weren't so familiar with Barney; I'm guessing much of its hate comes from reminding people of their least favorite purple dinosaur.

I don't mind Dragonite, although it took quite a bit of work to get there. But I know that he has a huge hatedom due to his not looking "badass" enough, in spite of his popularity.
