Why do people throw this word around like a karate fighter bathed in flames is something done often enough that it can be "generic"? You can dislike the design if you want, but each of the fire/fighting starters are very different, way more so than some other things like a lot of the gen 5 Pokemon where the specific intent was to recreate a line (Timburr/Machop etc).

Nobody complains about Sceptile because it's a "generic grass type starter that's monotype the third time in a row" because that's fucking irrelevant when we're talking about the artistic design and not their in-game typing.

Meganium was the only pure-grass prior to Sceptile and all of the johto starters were monotype.

Sure, Serperior was the third mono-grass starter but there were a Grass/Ground (itself a unique enough typing) before it, and Grass/poison in gen 1.
Plus there were plenty of reasons and disappointments surrounded Serperior besides its bland typing.

The difference though is with dual-typings, you have loads of options to be creative with it, and GameFreak elected to use the same type pairing three times in a row. Its the same kind of shit with Looker being in three games in a row for no real apparent reason.

The problem with the whole "boo hoo they did the same type combo 3 times in a row" is that you assume that's intentional. What makes any of you think they come up with the typings before the design, except for possibly gen 6 where they did the "second type also is a wheel" thing.

Regardless when you're talking just about what designs you like I don't see how its typing is even relevant. Blaziken, Infernape and Emboar look nothing alike aside from the obvious fire aspects. You might be able to make a case for Infernape and Emboar both having a chinese influence, but even then it's pretty minimal.

Yes the concept itself is intentional, but it's not like they gathered in a room and went "yes, lets make it stale by making the third fire/fighting type in a row" which is what people always seem to imply. It's a lot more likely they made some design they liked, went "oh i guess this also fits fire/fighting" and so it was.

Feraligatr was my favorite for four generations, and it still holds a special place in my heart.

In smash bros M I usually lose to a friend of mine who simply outskills me in most areas.

Today I decided to try out M's charizard, and things have never been the same.

Even when he tried his hardest to outplay me I just wrecked him with raw power. It was a one sided massacre no matter who he played.

So I guess Charmander is my favorite now.

I picked Mudkip because I thought it was the cutest out of the Hoenn starters. This was before internet and me knowing what the hell Pokemon was, so when it evolved I thought it was ugly as fuck both stages.

But love works in weird ways. My bro saved my ass so many times in Hoenn. I have one in XY now and I actually warmed up to Swampert's design.

Marshtomp's hilariously bad 3D model makes me lose my shit though, it's the most derptastic thing I've seen.

I honestly did not expect it to be that cool, and picked just because I thought everybody would be choosing Fennekin, and I knew at least one person would be picking Froakie.

I kind of like all of Gen 6's starters. That's rare for me, I usually consider at least one of the starters to be total shit. Usually the Water-type.
