In Gen 2, it was the middle of the road starter. Decent stats, but was unable to really use its STAB, Ice Punch, and Bite since they were Special moves.

In the remakes its way better than the others and its sweet as fuck.

It's good against every gym after Falkner/Bugsy.

Chikorita line is bulky and has status moves.
It survives where the other 2 would die.

Cyndaquil also fits the rival more, because Typhlosion is dark and edgy, like your rival.
Jaded bitter rival with a happy-go-lucky Meganium doesn't make any sense.

I really like chikorita, I don't mind bayleef, but I just dislike the look of meganium. it doesn't help that its pretty much deadweight throughout the game too.

but I pretty much always choose cyndaquil, even if the first two forms look better than the last

Confirmed for never having played gen 2.

Typhlosion's back is DARK in gen 2.
He looks angry and has blazing fire coming out of his back.

He embodies Silver's personality, fits his edgy team of Magneton and Sneasel perfectly, moreso than Feraligatr.

The first time I played through crystal I chose totodile... then raised a magicarp into a gyarados... then caught the red gyarados... then caught suicune...
I ended up facing the elite 4 with a team of those 4, jumpluff and an HM slave

If I'm going for a quick runthrough nowadays I usually choose Chikorita

Meganium had a movepool in gen4.

Its weak to every single gym, NVE against the rest except Kingdra and Miltank (Kingdra is notable because the other starters are quad-resisted by it.)

Never picked the water starter because there's always a fuckload of better water types in the game.

Same goes for grass.

There's usually only a few fire types, and they usually only appear lategame, so I generally always pick those.

Anyway, I generally go with Totodile, since I like all three of its stages while I'm not fond of Typhlosion and Meganium. It's also the middle of the road starter in Gen 2 and the best of them in Gen 4 in terms of mechanics, but lel doesn't really matter since you can beat the main game with almost any mon and none of the Johto starters have any place in competitive.

Chose totodile for the originals and the remakes, water starter is best starter and always will be.

Although I have tried the other two in the remakes and the originals and they're both okay as well. Totodile has a much broader movepool then the other two in the remakes an its design is slightly less simplistic than the other two, which is nice too.

In the G/S/C era I picked Totodile because I like reptiles.

In HG/SS I went with Chikorita. Just because. Have not regretted it at all. In my opinion it's the best looking Grass-type available in Johto, and HG/SS's sprite of Meganium is the best looking sprite GF's ever made of it.
