How much are you willing to admit nostalgia plays a part in the way you rank the gens?

For example, is the gen of your first pokemon game your favorite? Are there problems you overlook because the game was a part of your childhood?

For me, nostalgia influences my opinions somewhat, like I like the gen 1 starters a lot more than if they had come later in the series, but nothing so much that I overlook game flaws, like movesets. I still have a boner for the original soundtrack, though.

The aesthetics of the PCs in Gen I and II are the standard for pokemon, and the ugliest pokemon from Gen I and II don't hold a candle to neo-pokemon monstrosities such as Seismitoad and Conkeldurr. All gens have silly designs, from anything from ice cream cones to magnets, but early gens were never as brutally ugly as a lot of pokemon from Gen IV and V.

Luckily I think GF realized their art direction was going in the wrong direction, because both the pokemon and aesthetics of Gen VI are really good. I can't name a single hideous pokemon from Gen VI. Barbaracle is the only thing close and it's not even that bad.

The gens that I actually owned physically seem to have influenced my like more than anything.

Gens I and II were my favorite, and designs still today match up favorably to later gens. Gen VI has also had very good designs, and I can't fault Gen V or trying to be another Gen 1 (although, I only owned W2)

Gen 3 I've played a lot, but I don't like much from it, and Gen 4 I tried emulating it, be even then, I never made it to choosing my starter.
I>II>VI>V>III>IV

Mechanically of course, the most recent is the best. VI>V>IV>III>II>I

Remakes are just Gen I, II, III aesthetics in Gen III, IV, VI mechanics (which I very much enjoy. I wish all gens could be remade with each new change).

I know claiming to hate Gen IV is apparently a hip thing, but pardon me if I doubt that there's truth in your statement.

Gameplay-wise, I think X and Y are the best, though. I can totally recognize that early gens had some really shitty mechanics.

Well you can't really hate on gen IV if you haven't played it now can you? Well you can, but that seems like a really unfair judgement when you've played every game except Platinum and yet you'll say it's the worst just because you haven't experienced it.

So, nostalgia doesn't affect me at all, I guess. I'll always love and appreciate the first gens though. Every gen has something I love.
